He would apologize to Rook as soon as he found her — he hadn’t meant to come home so late. She probably had plans like any young adult on a Friday night, though thoroughly derailed at this point. It was so terribly hard to find a capable babysitter these days, especially one that his son adored and who adored him in return. He’d hate to lose her — Emmrich caught himself, clearing his throat as he pulled his scarf off, correcting all too quickly — for Manfred to lose her.
At such a tender age, his son needed that stability, something Emmrich knew might not be something he alone could offer between his work and his research.

In the corridor was a sign, weathered and rusted, but poignant all the same. TO DEFILE A GRAVE IS TO DEFILE THE MAKER. And yet, with each passing year in university, notes of certain students would become increasingly detailed. Incredibly rendered tendons and muscle structures, pages and pages of fine charcoal drawings of bones tilted in all manners of articulation. When questioned, these students would simply say they did the drawings during regular study, when they were given access to official cadavers all while picking dirt from their fingernails. And the faculty would simply turn a blind eye, because what evidence did they truly have? And if they benefitted from the knowledge gained, well there was no point in wasting such an opportunity.
