His shoulders slumped, seeming to carry more weight than someone so young should have to bear; his eyes were downcast, empty, lacking the sparkle that was so characteristic of him—and the same sparkle that he had preserved even in the circus. His face, covered in blood flowing from open wounds (only visible on his face, but she knew there were more), showed fear, a vulnerability she had never seen in him before.
