Keith nods back at the record player over his shoulder. “You are so old school, you know that? With your hair like that and your taste in music, people are really gonna think you’re an old man,” he jokes and he wants, desperately, for Shiro to look up with a grin and give him a cheeky, yet graceful retort.
“It’s classic, not old school. Maybe you should broaden your musical horizons,” he imagines Shiro would say. But he doesn’t.
That’s when Keith sees it. The gold ring on Shiro’s left hand; warm and shiny and terrifying.
On day two-hundred and thirty-seven, Keith finally sees Shiro in a solar flare vision and learns more about his best friend's future than he wanted. And then, Keith experiences his own future.

It was like a stamp on his forehead. Like a big red ‘S’ stitched into his uniform. Like a neon billboard sign hovering above his head that flashed, in big shining letters: I (heart) Takashi Shirogane.

Keith begrudgingly agrees to a cameo for the Coalition’s Voltron Show. As Shiro’s love interest.

Keith feels compelled to lift his gaze. On the other side of the safety glass, looking right back at him through the rearview mirror, are the most beautiful gray eyes Keith has ever seen. Like dark storm clouds slowly rolling over a churning, black sea. The driver’s long eyelashes flutter when he blinks and Keith almost feels himself slip into a trance.
“So, where to?” the cabbie asks.
Keith thinks his taxi driver might be one of the fair folk, a ghost, or something in between.

Keith stops dead. Shiro is pressed up against him, all the way the fuck up against him, and Keith can feel that Shiro is hard, and he's right against Keith's ass. Keith almost swallows his own tongue. Shiro's other hand comes around Keith’s other side and comes to rest at the edge of the terminal. Keith is entirely boxed in with Shiro's hard dick pressed against his ass. What's worse, Shiro leans closer to Keith's face, looking over Keith's shoulder. He looks at Shiro out of the corner of his eye and, Jesus Christ, Shiro gives a slow, rolling thrust. Keith knows that Shiro can be subtle; pressed this close together, it's unlikely for anyone to notice.
"What are you doing?" Keith hisses quietly.
"No idea what you're talking about."

Summary
In each timeline split, one goes well and one goes badly. Statistically speaking, there has to be a timeline where everything goes wrong and everything is lost. But those timelines need to be pruned, sheared off the stronger branches where life still thrives. Cloud Strife is the only reason his current timeline exists. After giving Sephiroth the Black Materia to destroy the world, he's left to wander the barren landscape alone for all eternity. Unable to die because of his own link to Sephiroth, he's keeping this fading timeline open simply by existing. But Gaia needs this timeline gone, so there's only one option: Remove Cloud from it entirely, and hand him over to another.
But this new world is very different from the one he originally comes from. On Gaia's World of the Tree, the most important bond people have is with the planet, while in Odin's World of the Wolf, that honor belongs to the bonds between people. Lifemates and packs, to be precise, so this is going to be interesting.

Chapter 1's beginning spints off my fic On Bound and Broken Wings. That's the only OBABW reference though, the rest is standalone.
