The first time Alina goes into the Fold and comes out as the Sun Summoner, she dies. The Druskelle succeed in ambushing the entourage and killing her on the way to the Little Palace. Alina is tiny, and sickly, and so when the Duke takes her and several other orphans to the dollmaker, she makes do with the scraps no one else wants. The resulting doll isn't conventional, but she loves it fiercely all the same. She loves it's black wool hair and it's black button eyes. She loves how safe she feels in the dark when she whispers her secrets to it, how grown-up she feels when it whispers secrets back.
Fast forward to the tent, to this man staring down at her with eyes as black as buttons and hair that looks soft as wool. This man, who surrounds her in darkness and shadow. This man, who looks at her like he knows her.
