Kimihiro Watanuki is weird.
Shizuka had heard that all of his school life. Sometimes people whispered it, or joked to each other, other times it was a warning. A few times it was loud enough that Watanuki would hear, or written on toilet walls for him to see.

He never had many friends, and he always kept to himself.
Shizuka saw him on the riverbank once, and he just looked so sad, so alone - after that he noticed him more. Sometimes he’d come to school and he’d be pale and shaking, other times he’d be panting like he just ran all the way there, then there were times that he’d be staring at nothing.

Dōmeki was so warm. Everywhere his skin touched Watanuki’s, heat bloomed. Warmth as a concept hadn’t existed for Watanuki for a long time. The shop was always cold inside, cut off from the sun as it was, and even when Maru and Moro invariably crawled into his bed at night, he was always freezing. They didn’t have souls, after all. There was nothing inside of them to generate it.
