Summary
Xie Lian prowls through the bustling city. It’s teeming with ghosts and is more lively than any living city that he’s ever stepped foot in. As he swiftly moves through the crowd, he can’t help but feel a vindictive sort of pride.
This is his kingdom, and every single ghost surrounding him is his citizen.
He built this place out of the ruins of what had been taken from him, and created a place so protected, not even heaven could break the walls of the kingdom that he made. Every piece of architecture, every antique, every citizen was precious to him. He held it all close to his chest with a fierce protectiveness.
This was the last of Xianle and he wasn’t going to let it go.
If only he had the last of his people, too.

A low, feral growl sounded from somewhere within the shack. Xie Lian’s breath hitched and, for a moment, he felt paralyzed and his heart seemed to forget how to keep a steady beat. His eyes flit across the room, searching for the threat that he so blatantly missed.
He found it with a metallic flash. Huddled in a corner shrouded in shadows was a silhouette. It was crouched over itself and though the silhouette was nothing more than an indistinct shape, Xie Lian could see that it had its hackles raised. He had no doubt that its eyes were trained on him. He could feel its gaze like a heavy weight, pinning him in his place.
Xie Lian stared at it, pivoted, and ran.
