The moment he stepped out of the doorway and into the boarding area he was scanning for a head of dark hair and a pair of crutches.
He found Johnny pretty quickly, hobbling towards him with a big grin on his face.
Ponyboy shoved his luggage towards the wall and sprinted towards the other boy, wrapping him up in a tight hug immediately.
“Pony!” “Johnnycakes!” They exclaimed at the same time, their voices overlapping.
“Golly, I missed you. College is so boring without ya’.” Pony murmured breathlessly, his grip iron around Johnny’s shoulders.
“Yer’ squishin me, Pone.”
“Crap, sorry.”
Ponyboy quickly loosened his grip and got a good look at his boyfriend.

His head was foggy and he briefly wondered how many head injuries he could sustain before the damage became permanent. The last thing he said before passing out was aimed at Paul, and it lacked the previous bite as he clung to consciousness, “My Mama would be so disappointed in you.” Ponyboy blacked out before he could see the way Paul hesitated.

When Steve turns eighteen all he can think about is finally getting out of the house he shares with his father. It hasn't been a home since his mother left, and he's been counting down the days until he could leave it. When he brings up the idea of getting a place with Sodapop, he's reminded that Soda can't just up and leave his brother's, especially while Pony is still a minor, and Darry still needs help with the bills.
He resolves to lets it go. It was a good dream, but a dream nonetheless.
What Steve doesn't expect is for Ponyboy to have a solution to his problems. Maybe the kid really was a genius.
AKA Steve wants to get a place with Soda, and ends up moving in with the Curtis brother's instead.

Summary
Almost ten years ago, the Curtis family's world falls apart when four year old Ponyboy is taken from the park nearby. Darry and Soda are left reeling when their parents are killed in an accident two weeks before the ninth anniversary of their brother's disappearance. In order for Darry to keep custody of Soda, he has to agree to be a temporary foster care parent. With an overcrowded system, he knows this is the State's way of creating more houses, and Darry knows he'll do whatever he can to keep his brother.
However, when Peter James, a fourteen year old who demands to be called "Pony", gets put in his care, Darry can't help but think he's getting more than he bargained for. It's impossible for him not to notice the similarities, and Darry and Soda both find themselves putting all the missing pieces together so that they might reunite with their baby brother, and bring him home for good.
aka an AU where Ponyboy finds his way back to his brothers in an unconventional way, proving that he's their baby brother in every universe, and they'll always find a way to take care of him.
