Summary
"I know." But his jaw is clenched, his breathing careful. "Just — let me do this right."
And she understands then that he's scared, too. He’s the one who’s seen her through all of it, who knows her better than she knows herself sometimes. Jack loves her, and she knows he’s terrified of hurting her, of pushing too hard, of undoing the careful healing of the past three months.

Summary
It’s not that Samira doesn’t hear Jack when he comes in. She does: the muted jangle of his keys, the snick of the door closing. She’s just halfway in his fridge, is all, blearily rooting around for Greek yogurt and berries she hopes against hope haven’t begun to fuzz, so it isn’t until he greets her with “well, aren’t you up early,” that she turns and realizes he isn’t alone.
“Is that Baby Jane Doe?”

Summary
“Wait,” Trin said slowly. “Wait a fucking minute.”
Mel looked between them, baffled. “Are you playing house with Zaddy Night Shift?” Trinity said, glee breaking across her face.
“Who is Zaddy Night Shift?” Mel asked, at least two decibels louder than the entire previous conversation. Princess started walking over. Samira put her face in her hands. “I am Zaddy Night Shift,” Dr. Ellis said, breezing by. “And I don’t play house. I provide a loving home for the right woman.”
“My heart belongs to another, king.” Trinity said absently. Mel looked at her in confusion. “Not you, Melancholy.”
“I do not understand what’s happening.” Mel announced cheerfully.
