Summary
As the tide rolls out, revealing a sickeningly familiar blue car, Harrier Du Bois sits on a swingset and thinks about whether amnesia is enough to justify becoming something else.
Kim pulls out a cigarette from his breast pocket and reaches into his jacket for a lighter. The sun has already set, but the remaining footsoldiers of light take a last stand, alighting into deep orange at the bottom of the horizon. Harry moves his face, and then his whole body, using the swing to assess the exact angle he needs to look in order to create the illusion that the lit end of Kim’s cigarette is one with the sunset. If he unfocuses his eyes, his disbelief can be suspended just enough that it looks like Kim – with his disciplined, single cigarette – is breathing in the apricot goodnight of the sun before, finally, the dark engulfs all.
A little voice in his head says: This one would be nice to keep as a memory. If the old ones never come back.

Doesn’t even flinch when Akemi reaches for her coat pocket to steal a Marlboro Ice from the packet and slips it between her fingers, holding it out for her to light like the prim-and-proper Princess that she is. She lights it for her, listening to her stifle a cough between a long dragged breath. She’d only started smoking when Mizu came around, after all. Bad influence, she could hear Seki’s comment in her head, if only she’d cared that much.
Who the fuck is she kidding.
She doesn’t know the first thing about love. She doesn’t think Akemi is any better off, either.
