Slowly, her arms encase you, like the sudden hug is a foreign concept to her. “It’s not your fault,” she says after a moment of silence.
Of course you know that. You know you couldn’t have prevented the outcome, or persuaded her to not take the case (as much as she didn’t want to go to the Wrenwood Hotel, it was her job to), but you still have a sinking heart now knowing exactly what Grace had gone through in less than thirty-six hours.
