Al-Haitham studies the letter on Kaveh’s ring finger as it moves against him, up and down, up and down. An S, printed faintly into the skin. It’s the sort of thing that’s sickening to look at, but at the same time, impossible to look away from. Al-Haitham thinks he prefers it when Kaveh wears gloves. But still, on the rare occasion that Kaveh’s hands are exposed, he always looks. He cannot pry himself away from the S and the S will not pry itself off of Kaveh’s skin, and so he surmises that he and the letter have reached a sort of impossible stalemate.

Al-Haitham doesn't care about soulmates or soul marks or Fate. Kaveh, unfortunately, does.

The Tsaritsa motions for him to continue.
“My people must be tested. I need to be certain that they can defend themselves. When I step down, the adepti will be forced to step back. To test them, they need a strong enemy. One who will cause chaos and destruction, who seems like an opponent that only I and the adepti should be able to defeat. One who will be committed to the cause.”
She nods, pulling the contract back.
“One who will know nothing of the true plan. One who has their orders, and will be my pawn to lead.”
“You ask for a near-unbeatable opponent, but one who is easily manipulated?” She raises an eyebrow.
“Too tall an order, Your Highness?” he challenges.
“Just the opposite.”
