    Summary

That’s the trick to him; caring is all he really knows how to do, which is not to say that he does it well. Coveted, unwanted, persecuted or cast aside, it matters not; the beast that wears his face is always parched. What will it be this time? Forty, maybe fifty years until Daniel stops using kinder names for Armand’s transgressions? It’s much too soon to fall back onto old patterns, Louis’ absence still to crystallize fully and his weakness for Daniel a ruminating, living thing inside of his dead chest, making a bigger space for itself every second.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Armand bares his teeth, “Stop goading me. You’d have me mad.”

    “I’d have you honest.”

Dust swirls when he crouches next to his prone form and lifts his head up, claws barely scratching the boy’s chin until that gaze is fixed on Armand again. Not for the first time since meeting, he thinks that a person could go to great lengths to keep those clever eyes on themselves.

“And if my honesty begets your death?” Armand comments, tone even, curious. He’s not yet decided whether he’s in the mood to heed Louis’ warning but he is, as ever, unable to tear himself away from Daniel’s irritating gravitational pull.

“Please, Mr. Vampire, will you kill me fast so that I don’t have to keep hearing French theater plays described in excruciating detail.”

    Summary

“I never saw the finished piece,” Armand says wistfully, “only the preparatory sketches.”

It’s mostly the surprise that knocks the laugh out of Daniel.

Armand twists to face him, face twisted into a wounded grimace.

“C’mon,” Daniel groans. “I mean, seriously? Michelangelo’s muse?”

    “Don’t laugh,” Armand says quietly.

Daniel should stop. He knows he should stop, that he's pushing too far on buttons he knows he should leave well alone. But what was it Armand had said at the penthouse? It’s his nature. He can never resist throwing one more bomb.

    Summary

It was a side to Armand that was completely alien and yet, at the same time, incredibly familiar. Daniel felt like he knew him; this new and questioning thing that hung his body over Daniel’s shoulder, poking at prodding at his new sharp nails and new cold skin.

He’d seen glimpses whilst the Gift was taking hold; scatters of memories that were his-and-not-his, faded recollections of him and Armand in the seventies, eighties, in London and Berlin and in New Orleans and Paris and on empty moonlit beaches. In what situation had he ever seen Armand like that? Did they have a break from the torture in San Francisco so Daniel could watch him dance on his lanky bare legs in the shallow seawater, showing all of his teeth as he laughed openly?
