Summary
"And with Rashid gone, and the rest of the staff along with him, it had reduced his world down to one person. One person, who had seen him there covered in dust with a broken spine, and had not left when he should have.
The rest of those days are not worth dwelling on, either. The moment that truly matters is the end, when he had stared down at Daniel on the floor of the penthouse he no longer owned, and looked back into glaring orange eyes that reflected his own. When he had felt something snap into place, as though he was growing another limb made of rage and bitterness and martinis with too much vermouth, and realized— Oh.
Daniel Molloy. His firstborn— his only— fledgling. He was a maker, for the first time in his immortal existence, and that bond he had believed to be gone had returned. Not in the same way, of course— Daniel Molloy is a singular experience, a universe unto himself, but he is no god. He does not feel for Daniel Molloy how Amadeo had felt for his master, or even how Armand had felt for his maitre. Where Marius was divinity, Daniel Molloy— even as a vampire— is deeply, wholly human.
He resents him for it. He admires him for it. And, once, he had— "

Summary
His voice comes out tired. "Why are you here, Kal?"
He's not surprised that someone would have come after him, given his rather abrupt exit from the training field. If he's honest with himself, it was more like fleeing. Trying to escape the crawling shame and humiliation and pitying looks when Father had berated him, in front of everyone.
You're nobody.
No, he's not truly surprised. But he would have expected it to be Margaret who followed him. The fact that it's Kal, of all people… that is surprising, to say the least.
"What a way to start a conversation!" Kal exclaims, in his usual mocking brightness. Something about it sounds tighter than usual—forced, strained, in some way he can't quite discern without turning around to check. "Usually people start with hello, Dak."

Summary
It doesn't take long for him to step back inside the Grotto, heading for his desk where several projects are strewn out in various states of completion. His recently upgraded scanner, a few other prototypes he's been slowly assembling, and the radio he uses for communication across Lincoln. Each something he's put his all into, and each something he treasures. Creation, taking mere pieces and ideas and building something new with his own hands, is always a beautiful thing to him— it's why he's held a passion for it since he was a child. This grotto is filled with proof of that.
Right as he sits back down and gets ready to work once more, the radio crackles to life, buzzing with static. It's likely just Addison, giving a report from the Antikythera on the events of the day, or Ahlaam, asking how his projects have gone. He reaches across the desk to grab it and holds it to his lips, prepared to answer, when—
"Hi, Dak!"
—He freezes.
That's not Addison or Ahlaam.
Even before all of this, there was still only ever one person who called him that.
OR
Unfortunately, there are cons to the radio being invented early.

Summary
"It doesn't feel right, to manage this with just the three of them. Him, Sia, and Ahlaam all keep leaving spaces for the people who aren't with them anymore. He's seen Ahlaam turn to her side with that gentle look she always saved for Taavi, and Sia begin to defer to Margaret, before cutting herself off mid-sentence. And he's no better. He keeps expecting to see Cyrus scratching out notes at the desk next to him, Mary Katharine draped over his back and arguing about how they'd even manage to find the materials he'd outlined in his grand plans. It hits him every time he looks over at the chairs that they'd claimed the first time he'd shown them Lincoln, or at the organ Mary Katharine found for him in Italy. The ghosts of them— *all* of them— seem to fill the air around him, thick enough he worries he'll choke.
There's another ghost following them, too. But none of them will allow themselves to think about him."

Summary
"'It’s not an issue.' John shrugs, but he sees the slight wince that crosses his face, even with just the lamp illuminating the room. 'I’ve dealt with it before.'
'I know you have.' His voice is quiet. 'But you don’t have to.'
John turns to look at him, then. His eyes, usually bright and direct as a bolt of lightning, look so much more clouded now, weighed down by pain and exhaustion. They soften, just slightly, when their gazes meet. 'I…' He trails off. It’s unlike John to not know what to say. 'Would you… want to assist?'
He could laugh, at the way John’s phrasing it. As though it’s for his benefit. But this is the first time, of all the many nights John’s come home like this, that he’s accepted help. It means even more that he’s asking for it first, in his own way. He’s not sure what changed, but he doesn’t want to ask, in case that makes him reject it again. 'Yeah. I would.'"

Summary
“Oh, what the fuck?” both she and the strange boy breathe out at the same time.
Natalie groans, rubbing her eyes. “I’m too high for this,” she grumbles.
He points at her, almost accusingly. “I’m not,” he says.
“Gold star to the hallucination, then,” she deadpans, pinching the bridge of her nose. The shock of knocking over the pot sobered her enough that she feels less like she’s floating through time, but clearly she’s still tripping on something if she’s seeing him now.
That, or it’s not the fault of the drugs. But she’d rather not consider that possibility.
“I’m not the hallucination,” he says. “You are.”
Or: Five times Natalie meets the Gabe that could've lived, if she hadn't.

Summary
It happens to everyone, at some point. Nodding off at a stakeout or behind the wheel or even standing upright, in stakes that range from mildly embarrassing to immediately life-threatening. In this line of work there are stretches of time where sleep is a luxury you can't afford, and everybody has their own way of handling it.
