Summary
One night, as they sat by a fire, Ellie turned to Joel, her expression serious. “Do you think soulmates really exist?”
“I do,” he replied without hesitation. “Maybe not in the way people think, but I believe some connections are meant to be.”
“What about us?” she asked, her voice soft but steady.
“I think we’re each other’s,” he said, meeting her gaze. “In a world like this, finding someone who gets you—that’s rare. We’re lucky.”
Ellie smiled, warmth blooming in her chest. “Yeah, we are.”
In a world torn apart, can two souls find strength in each other? This is a story of the impossible connection between platonic soulmates finding each other.

“I’m fine,” she says stiffly, and he sighs, rubs the back of his neck, peers up at her.
“It’s alright-”
“I’m fine.”
Her voice is too loud in the icy darkness of their kitchen. Joel stares at her a second longer, throat bobbing, lips pressed thin. “Alright,” he says at last. “But you - if you aren’t, you can tell me. Okay?”

During a hard week of winter, black outs roll across Jackson, and one of Ellie's childhood fears rears its head.

Summary
“Ellie,” Maria says gently, the same voice she uses to soothe Benji back to sleep when he wakes in the night. “Ellie, honey, can you hear me?”
The only sound is Ellie’s breathing, ragged and tense, filling the tiny space and leaving pinpricks of dread across Maria’s skin. She turns her attention to the knife in Ellie’s hand–it’s practically an extension of herself, and with the way Ellie’s knuckles are white as she clenches it Maria isn’t sure she realizes she’s holding it at all.--
When Ellie has a bad day at school, Maria is the one to come to her aid. She recognizes something in Ellie that reminds her of her past, and tries her best to make sure Ellie knows she's not alone.
