Summary
The Order tells the world that James and Lily Potter died heroes.
The truth is much messier.
After Lily’s death on a mission orchestrated by Dumbledore, James disappears, determined to uncover Voldemort’s secrets and destroy him for good. Inside the room, a figure shifted near the far wall, gun held in hand, Not shaking at all.
Regulus took a step forward without thinking.
“James?”
or..Three years after James Potter disappears and is presumed dead, the war keeps moving, but the people closest to him don’t. James is alive, but conditioned, distant, and reacting like someone who has learned that recognition is dangerous. Regulus just wants James back.

Although, when they’re back at Hogwarts, and a particularly nasty comment is said about Regulus’ sexual preferences during a Quidditch game, James is ultimately unable to conceal his rage and well… things go DOWNhill from there. (Or, technically, very uphill in the love department.)OR
