Sam looks up, nervous. “This is all very new to me, and there are some things I don’t understand. And you… I don’t know, you seem to know what you’re doing. I thought maybe you could teach me.”
A beat of silence. Deena can’t believe what she’s hearing.
    “Teach you what?”
“How to be a lesbian.” Sam shrugs, like she just asked Deena to lend her five dollars.

    Summary

She hates the way she still craves her touch — hates that she wants to melt into it; that she still thinks about the way she feels on her skin, and the way her lips touched hers that night.
It had taken everything in her not to call her the past few months. She often found herself hovering over the landline at all hours of the night, and having to talk herself out of picking it up and dialing that all too familiar phone number.
She was heartbroken. Sometimes, it still feels like she is. But she’d worked hard this summer to get over it — to forget the feeling of that night, no matter how crushing it was.
And still, it comes back from time to time, when she’s least expecting it. Festers deep in her chest, and settles into her lungs. That all-consuming ache; the one most similar to grief she’d ever felt. It’s cruel, she thinks, because it takes her sense of security away. She wonders how she can really know herself, if she doesn’t know when this feeling will end. She’s terrified it never really will.
