Headcanons about vaguely weird Cybertronian fauna, mostly based on fish and reptiles because I happen to like those. Only vaguely science-adjacent.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Sideswipe nearly leaked a little oil when Jetfire came storming up, holding one hefty looking blaster.
It was time. This was it. The science-bot has had enough with Prowl and was going to take him out. Sideswipe was prepared to jump out of the murder-walk path until Jetfire thrust the weapon in his hand.
It wasn't a blaster. It was a compressor used to drive bolts into a surface.
"I have a job for you," Jetfire said very Prime-like, "the fate of all tables, and everything that sits on them, rests on your shoulders."

    *Later*
    Prowl is grumbling.
He swears, if he finds whoever bolted every table-leg down, he will MAKE a table out of their frame and throw THEM around.

    -

Sunstreaker didn’t know what more to ask. He now had a deeper understanding of why this man was so protective and loyal to you, and it was very similar to how he felt about his own brother. He would tear the galaxy asunder if anything happened to him. He could only imagine what Alan would do for you.

    -

With what little strength you had left, you managed, “I’m about to fall asleep.”

    “Good,” Sideswipe’s voice was quiet.

“If you’re having trouble, you can wake me.” You curled up on your side.

“I think I’ll be okay,” His voice sounded distant as you drifted off, “I’m listening to the soft beating within your frame. I think I’ll be okay.”

I shook my head, “Why does it matter?” He glared at me and I sighed, “I said that wrong. What I meant was… twenty years is a big deal to humans, but to y’all… it’s nothing, right? I was gone, you blinked, and suddenly I was back?”

Ratchet’s face softened, “I see your reasoning. I understand it.” He paused before continuing, “But what you don’t understand is our view of time has changed since we befriended humans.”

    “How so?”

“Time never mattered to us. Centuries would go by and most of our kind wouldn’t even really notice. It matters here though.” He sighed, “For twenty years, we watched so much change with Tyler, Taylor, and Peter. Even with Aubrey and…and Wes. We see it again with Annabelle, Lex, and Eli. With Lennox and Epps. All the soldiers. Time affects you humans so greatly. A year passes and everything changes. Five years go by and everything is different.” Ratchet scoffed lightly, “Aubrey has a new youngling. Peter…Peter has a youngling of his own. All this time passes and it truly affects us now because change is visibly happening before us. I’ve lived through thousands of years where nothing has happened, nothing has changed. Yet here on this small, organic planet… twenty years is gone and…”

The room was filled with silence between us. I hadn't ever really thought about it like that. I always just assumed.

Ratchet cleared his throat, “Perhaps if we had been on Cybertron and you were the only physical human we knew…perhaps then it would’ve been like a blink of an optic. We wouldn’t have noticed a thing. Here though? We were reminded every 24 Earth hours that you were gone. Things kept changing, but the only thing that stayed the same was your absence.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Let's see here. Oh! Oh. Poor Bluestreak. He's very soft-hearted, and I guess he assumes that as the Ark's resident girl I must be too. So I get a lot of voice mails like this one:

"Carly! I just hit a raccoon! Help! It's just lying there what do I do?!"

He was a mite bit upset with me when I phoned him back to ask him if it had left a dent.

    Sunstreaker, on the other hand:

"DAMN IT! I JUST HIT A DEER. ONE OF YOUR EARTH DEER. SHIT! I AM GONNA HANG THIS FUCKER FROM A TREE TO SERVE AS A WARNING TO ALL THE OTHER DEER.”

    -

Wheeljack's texts, on the other hand, are just hilarious. And bone-chilling.

"Thermite. Where can I find some?"

"In lab. Spike rendered unconscious by fumes again. Please advise."

"I did it! I got it to reach the estimated height of one hundred feet!"

He was referring to a grease fire, in case you were wondering.

"Wow, the penetration power of this rebar is incredible."

"tping this frm computer w/ thumbs fingers gone oh theres one. plz call ratchet"

"Carly, come back! I think I've got the radius of the blast zone figured out this time."

    And my personal favourite:

"Microwaving the C4 now. Stand by.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Sideswipe," growled the mech, "is all that matters."

She stared blankly up into those pale, scowling optics as something within her mind went click.

    He doesn't have anyone else.

For no reason she could readily explain, she felt as though someone had punched her in the gut. The brig walls pressed in on her as her thoughts delved rapidly down paths they had never before explored.

He and Sideswipe both… These are their people, but other than that, they're just as much strangers here as me.

And I've had Sideswipe holding my hand every step of the way, and Ratchet, and Jazz, and Blue…

Sunstreaker's expression was melting from irritated to confused as she continued to peer up at him, and he shifted restlessly.

… but he hasn't had anyone.

She abruptly remembered a day long, long ago, back when she viewed her parents as giants equal to any Cybertronian, and her sister was a boy-obsessed klutz, and her brother –caught soundly in the throes of some strange illness called 'puberty'– had metamorphosed from an idolized hero to an utterly alien species. That day, she had been ejected from his bedroom none-too-gently, accompanied by an infuriated bellow of "Get out, you little brat!"

Evelyn sat down firmly in the hallway and began to wail.

Her father heard the racket and gave Dick a talking-to that climaxed with the teenager screaming that they didn't understand, no one cared, and why couldn't they just leave him alone?

Ethan Hughes had granted his wish. Dick was grounded for a week.

Evelyn, vindicated but no less upset about her big brother's sudden hatred for all things small and Evelyn-shaped, cuddled with her favorite plush rabbit and paged absently through her well-worn copy of Goodnight Moon, trying to ignore the faint throb of Dick's music that set the walls vibrating and Lizzy's off-key humming/singing to whatever was playing on her walkman.

Then, after supper – and Evelyn remembered even that: spaghetti and tomato sauce with a special side of slices of garlic cheese bread, her mother's way of attempting to cheer her daughter's still-sour mood, – Maria Hughes had loaded a plate with generous servings and filled a glass with tea, tucked several of her son's wayward car magazines beneath her arm, and disappeared into her son's room. The throbbing music cut off, and Evelyn stared down the hallway, feeling betrayed.

"You're being nice to him!" she blurted accusingly when her mother exited minutes later, minus food, tea, and magazines.

    "Well, yes," her mother admitted.

"Why? He's just being plain old mean!"

"That doesn't mean your father or I… or you or Lizzy, for that matter, love him any less."

This logic went clear over Evelyn's head; she tilted her head and squinted up at her mother, awaiting clarification. Maria Hughes chuckled, settled upon the couch, and pulled her daughter onto her lap.

"Let's see, how to explain…" she murmured, playing gently with Evelyn's ponytail. "Evelyn, everyone needs at least one person who will always be on their side. No matter how silly, how selfish, or how… mean–" She glanced at her daughter. "–they are, everyone needs that support.

"Not to say that special person can't give them a quick kick in the rear and tell them how silly, selfish, or mean they're being," Maria added, grinning slyly at her daughter, prompting a giggle from the young girl. "And you… just think how lucky you are. You've got me, and your father, and Lizzy, and even Dick, believe it or not, and Uncle Titus, and Gram Meredith, and so, so, so many others that all love you, no matter what. Isn't that a wonderful thought?"

    -

"You ever feel like you're about to fall off the world?" she asked quietly.

There was a brief pause, then, "I'd catch you. An' if I missed, you'd never get past Met.”
