Ilya gave the man a blatant once-over. He was wearing a boring gray polo, boring black jeans, and boring white sneakers, but when he turned his head Ilya’s way, Ilya caught a glint that, upon further inspection, was a pair of snug silver hoops, one in each ear. He had a smattering of freckles across his nose and cheeks that made him look boyish, but he must’ve been around Ilya’s age. Good-looking at first glance, devastating the second when you, the voyeur, realized he had no idea that he was. He was clean-cut and dark-haired, exactly Ilya’s type.
Ilya flicked his eyes down to the man’s hands, the left tapping out a nervous rhythm against the bar. Broad hands, blunt nails, cut to the quick. No ring, oral fixation, pierced ears. Excellent. He could work with that.

The thing is, there was a brief point in time in which he could have told her – not all of it, not details, not the real truth of it – something like there’s a boy but he has to be a secret, and she of course would have kept that secret. Like she kept Sasha a secret, like he kept her worst boyfriends and best girlfriends secret. A brief window between when the thing with Shane became something worth mentioning, and before he got greedy, got desperate, and fucked it all up.
Ilya has some conversations with Svetlana as he goes through the torment nexus and finds out what's on the other side.
