When Ruth turned to face Idgie, her big brown eyes were swimming in tears. “I can’t have his baby. I can’t,” she whispered furtively, even though there was no one else around to hear.
“Oh, come ‘ere.” Idgie gathered Ruth up in a fierce, protective hug. “I got ya.” Ruth’s whole body trembled in Idgie’s arms.
The brunette said something, but it was muffled against Idgie’s collarbone.
“What was that, darlin’?” Idgie prompted with a loving squeeze.
“I’m going to hell,” Ruth whimpered, bursting into complete waterworks.or
