Summary
“It’s a breakthrough heat. You will need strong pain meds now, an alpha and three rounds of knotting later at minimum.”
Yeah, like that’s gonna happen. Robby scoffs. “Is this what passes for bedside manner up here? How are your patient satisfaction scores looking?”
“I have a no-sugarcoating policy with difficult patients. Do you wish to share what caused it?”
This place and myself in general. Or it could be that ICE agent who growled in my face. Animals. The lot of them.
“…So I won’t make my sabbatical on time.”Or, biology stages an intervention.

Summary
The letter arrives on a Tuesday morning. Jack is at work, so Robby is home alone when he rips open the envelope and unfolds the letter inside.
He reads it three times, like he expects to find something new. It has to be a joke, or maybe it was sent to the wrong person. But it's his full name at the top of the letter, and the headed paper looks real.
********
Robby receives a letter one day that cracks open a part of his past he thought had been closed forever. Jack helps him through some decisions he has to make.

Summary
The first time the call goes to voicemail, Jack just hangs up with a sigh. At least Robby would see that he called. Know that Jack’s thinking about him.
It isn't until the fourth failed call that Jack starts leaving messages after the tone.
“Hey Rob, it's Jack.”

Summary
“I’m coming to get you,” Jack says because he actually hasn’t told him that yet.
“No,” Robby says weakly, smacking his lips together. “Jack, I don’t want you to.”
“Tough shit,” Jack answers, and he would argue that Robby does want Jack to go get him seeing as Robby called him.

Summary
Robby perfects talking to him without talking to him. Checks in with banal questions about the whens of his shifts and barely remembers to listen to the answers. He’s pantomiming participating in life, and badly. He misses the looks that Jack sends him, drops the references, bumps shoulders around ER beds.
They have a shorthand, the two of them. They don’t need words or explanations, not when they have a rhythm and choreography that decades of working together have given them.
Only Robby can’t hear the music now.
