Summary
by the time he turned 35, still single and child-free, Buck had accepted that it would most likely be his reality. He wouldn’t get what he wanted, not traditionally, but he could find comfort in a platonic partnership with Eddie and in being involved in the raising of his child. There would be no picket white fence and golden retriever, sure, but Buck wouldn’t exchange either of the Diaz boys for anything in the world, certainly not for pieces of wood and a quadrupedal animal. Evan’s eyes snatch away from Eddie and he looks up to the front of the class, where everyone’s turned to look at the two of them. Mr.Robert, his teacher, standing in front of them with both hands on his hips, an inquisitive look on his face. He raises an eyebrow, as if to say “so? is there?”
Evan tries to swallow, then clear his throat before simply shaking his head in response.
“You’re sure?” his teacher asks again, bringing out a cooling sensation of humiliation down his spine, “Because you seemed really interested in it.”
He tries to bite his tongue, unsuccessful. “I wasn't aware that where my eyesight landed was any of the school’s problems, Mr. Robert.”

Buck shakes his head, opening his mouth to say something but nothing comes out. What can he say, really? Sorry, Eds, I thought you were my kidnapper standing over me! So he sighs, head going down to his chest and he winces, both from the pain and from bringing that hurt look on his best friend’s face. “I-I got startled,” he says, voice creaking as he speaks.
Eddie waves him off, “It’s-It’s okay,” stutters, fidgeting with his fingers. “I got close,” he says, gesturing to him, the bed and the glass of water on the table. A moment of silence passes

“I’m sorry,” Eddie says, hand unmoving now and simply resting on top of Buck’s ribs. That he can handle. He’s still shaking, body vibrating from his head to his toes, and Buck’s so cold he tries to grab on the covers and pull them up, but fails. Maybe he’s not strong enough. “Let me do it,” Eddie offers, already doing it and bringing the blankets all the way to his face, covering his own legs in the process. “Here.” It helps a little bit, and maybe it’s the weight of the blankets on top of him, but Buck could swear that the shaking is going down now.
Eddie is so close, too, that Buck can feel his body heat. He’s the only one who gets into bed with him; everyone else sticks to the chair or even just stays in the living room and leaves him to sleep on his own. Buck doesn’t have a preference for any; it’s not like he can’t sleep without having someone in the room with him, but for some reason, having Eddie in bed with him is more comforting than he thought it would be.

“Buck?” he asks, probing gently in that way he does when he can see Buck needs to get something off his head.
“D-do you think Eddie and I smell too much like each other?” he asks, and Bobby gives him this smile that feels a little telling.
“I think,” Bobby says, looking back down at his chopping board as he expertly dices onions, “that you and Eddie smell like two people who spend a lot of time together, and who care for each other a great deal.”
