    Creating art was his greatest source of joy. Stede especially enjoyed sculpting with clay because he liked seeing it come together. Making something malleable and soft and shapeless turn into something solid and definite was like an antithesis to the rest of his life, which always felt like it was just beyond his control. A ship he was captaining but didn’t know how to steer.

    Stede understood clay and tools. People and relationships, on the other hand, he often did not.
