Ruben only agreed to drive Niall north because it was supposed to be simple: one night in Ruben grandmother’s old house, a few boxes of photo albums, then home before the snow got worse.But the snow keeps falling. The road disappears. The house is colder than expected, the fire refuses to behave, and Niall keeps looking at Ruben like he has found something worth keeping.
Ruben can handle the weather. He can handle the axe, the dark, the silence, and the old memories waiting inside the walls.
He cannot handle Niall leaving for college.

The sidewalk bit into Niall's thrashing body like teeth. Every deep breath sat cold and dry in his lungs, every muscle drawn painfully taut beneath Ruben. Their limbs tangled frantically as they fought to overpower each other.
