“Lin, I am trying to study here, I have an exam tomorrow.”
“What are you studying?”
Dorothea sighs. “Reason magic. I’m not bad at it, but it is so boring, so I have to really focus so that I can retain the information.”
“Ugh,” Linhardt says, “I hate reason magic. It’s so finicky. You can’t rely on emotions at all. Do you really have no interest in this extremely steamy and mysterious story I just picked up from between the encyclopedias? No interest at all?”
“Lin, what are you talking about?”
He waves around a little book, and Dorothea finally looks up. The book looks homemade. Still well-done, but clearly created by someone without an advanced degree in book binding. Linhardt is making the most irritating, punchable face, and briefly she imagines casting one of her spells at it.
“May I see the book, Lin, dear?”
“Oh,” he replies, “I thought you were studying hard?”
Dorothea rolls her eyes. “Yes, I was.” She turns back to her studying.

“Fine,” Linhardt sighs. “Let me see you in action, then.”
Bernie narrows her eyes. “Why?”
