She laughs softly. “Course not Jeff, you don’t have to do anything.”
Is Jeff’s brain hearing it different? Why does it sound so awful? Why is it making his gut twist?
“But is this the thing women do where they say they don’t want something and then they get upset when I didn’t read their minds and do it?” he asks.
Annie rolls her eyes. “Jeff, I’m not turning 12,” she says. “If I wanted something from you, I’d just ask.”Or
It's Jeff's turn to organise the plans for a group member's birthday, and that just so happens to be Annie's birthday. But when Annie doesn't seemingly want a lot of the fuss Jeff thinks she deserves, he's forced to face the reality of a few other feelings he's been ignoring lately.
