Summary
Recently retired from the army, James is lonely and in need of occupation, so he takes up baking as a means of filling the time. Before he knows it, he’s signed up to be a contestant on his favourite TV baking show and, once inside the tent, he finds himself unexpectedly distracted by a fellow contestant, one Anthony Havers — for all the wrong reasons.

To understand this, one must firstly understand that Anthony Peter Havers is not crazy.
He just has a very strong sense of imagination. Or at least that’s what he is supposed to tell people. He sees people who aren’t there. He hears people who aren’t there. But that is no cause for alarm, because, as previously mentioned, he is not crazy. Just imaginative.

In 1929, James’s first trip abroad goes pleasantly awry at a Viennese production of The Nutcracker. By some miracle he manages to get talking to one of the dancers after the performance, and things soon escalate into a night he is sure he will never forget.
Eleven years later, his memories are thrown into turmoil when a familiar face appears somewhere it absolutely should not be.
