Anastasia AU. When Nami convinces him to embark on a trip to fleece someone like Dracule Mihawk for a hefty sum of berries, Sanji didn’t expect anything much of it. Then they find him: a doppelgänger that they can pass off as the only surviving Shimotsuki.

If only the green-haired bastard isn’t so fucking rude.

Sanji is carefully placing a cherry on top of the ice cream, his hands nimble, soft, almost—gentle. But all Zoro sees is the way the hems of his pants are still soaked in blood from an earlier skirmish with a marine ship, red seeping into the cracks on the floorboard, spattering across the kitchen floor in a slow drip, drip, drip.

Zoro stares, fascinated. He can’t bring himself to look away.

(Or, Zoro and Sanji—terrible monsters, in love)

A voicemail from an unknown number, recorded at 3:17 AM during Zoro’s layover flight. The number will be disconnected by the time Zoro notices and tries to call back.

The transcription: Hey. It’s me. Listen, I’ve got to go. Don’t you dare try to fucking follow me, you lughead. I’m not sure if I’ll come back anytime soon. Tell Luffy that I’m sorry but this is something that I have to do. I—

A self-deprecating huff of laughter as Sanji cuts himself off. Fuck. Um, keep the others safe, yeah? I won’t be using the Los Angeles safehouse anymore, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it. God knows how many times you’ve nearly bled out on that couch.

Another pause, followed by weary exhale that Zoro feels in his bones. And Zoro, I—

Whatever Sanji's trying to say gets stuck in his throat again, sticky and tar-like. It's—never mind. Take care of yourself, mosshead.

    The voicemail ends there.

Alternatively: do you have to know someone in their entirety to love them unconditionally?

It’s not him, Sanji reminded himself, frantically. You’re jumping at phantoms again. Flinching at shadows. It’s not him, and it’s never going to be.
Except it was. Broader and battered and down to one working eye, but it was.
Across the crowded room, Roronoa Zoro lifted a sun-faded, wide-brimmed leather hat off his head and looked up to meet Sanji’s gaze for the first time in seven years. “Hey, cook,” he said.
Sanji calmly reached beneath the bar and hefted a shot glass into his hand, tossing it straight up and catching it in his palm to test the weight. Then he wound up and flung it unceremoniously at Zoro’s traitorous skull.
“Get the fuck,” Sanji said, “out of my bar.”

“You know none of this is true, right?” The shitty hunter soaks in the tacky decor of the coffee shop with visible distaste.

    “What?”

“Vamps don’t actually turn into bats,” he huffs, poking at a dangling plastic decoration. “And they sure as hell don’t wear capes, either. They look just like any average person. That’s what makes them so dangerous.”

“Oh. I had no idea,” lies Sanji, who is most definitely an average person and not a vampire. He shoots the mosshead his best customer service smile, the one that screams sir, this is just an innocent local business with no affiliation to vampires, the Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus. “Can I get you anything?”

Alternatively: In this economy, you gotta do what you gotta do. Some people hunt rogue vampires. Others run coffee shops that cater specifically to their fellow creatures of the night, and try their best not to get staked through the heart (or fall in love).
