As they continue to work together, Merlin starts to take issue with how people talk about George behind his back.

    Still, George stares.

    “But- the Prince-”

“I’m sure Arthur can cope for an hour or two,” Merlin dismisses, finally looking up as he cottons on to George's spluttered confusion. “He's faced worse."

Merlin slumps, puts his head in his hands, because there's only one way he's getting out of this, probably. “She’s the mother,” he says, despondently. “Morgana is Aithusa’s mother.”

There is complete and total silence. Then Morgana says: “Surprise?”

“Merlin doesn’t lie to me,” says Arthur, clear and even. “There is no doubt—”

“Of course I lie to you,” says Merlin, choosing this terrible, horrible moment to become lucid. “I’ve been lying to you since we met.”

    Summary

But he had to, he had to, whatever they said of his father and whatever shame he felt in so marring his legacy. The deaths could not continue. Magic was not so rare as the nobility wanted to believe. At least a third of Camelot’s population were sorcerers, or had the capability to become so, an absurd number for a kingdom that steadily lost such kinds to execution and magical attacks. It was as though magic was being called here, centered in his kingdom, and he could not fight it any longer.

The Disir had given him a choice, and he stood by his answer. He’d gone in alone before them and left with a new vow.

Magic would be free, and Arthur would honor its gods.
