Summary
There used to be a Bible verse hanging up in Marianne’s house, on the empty spot of wall at the top of the stairs, to the right of Isak’s bedroom door. It was needlework, done on a white evenweave canvas, decorated with stitched green ivy. There’s lots of religious decor around the house, especially now that Terje doesn’t live there anymore, but none of it sticks out in Isak’s mind quite as much as that specific embroidery.

Point being, he’s not going to start now. He’s almost thirty years old, damn it. He’s not going to sit on a couch and have a wine-driven, tear-filled heart to heart. He’s just not.
He stands instead. “I’m going to go for some fresh air, I think. Maybe it’ll help clear my head and I can start being a decent party guest.” He shuffles away before Jonas can protest or ask questions, heading for their balcony. It’s warm outside for the season, and the second the setting sun hits him, he takes a deep breath and closes his eyes.
When he opens them again, he sees that one of the two chairs is occupied. He only has to glance for a second to see who’s in the other chair; he’d know that blond hair anywhere.

As he pulled out the last of his books on the bookshelf, one of the scrapbooks came loose and fell to the floor, face up. Isak automatically glanced down at the cover.
Morocco - Summer 2017 was written in white ink on the cover in Even’s handwriting. Above it was a picture of the two of them pressed cheek-to-cheek and smiling with a happiness Isak hadn’t felt in weeks. They were standing atop the roof of a building, the vibrant lights of the marketplace below them twinkling in the background like colorful stars.
Isak swallowed.
He wasn’t sure what possessed him to do it. But he turned back around and reached for the scrapbook on the floor.
