    Summary

After his bondmate is lost at the launch of the Enterprise-B, a grief-stricken Spock vows to return the favour Jim once did him: to return his body to the planet of his birth. But to have any chance of doing so, he will need to track down the anomaly that almost destroyed the Enterprise. Following a report of similar phenomena takes him to an area of space that has not been explored since the first five-year mission of the original Enterprise, facing an unstable anomaly giving off strong chronaton radiation...

Four years into their five-year mission, tired of wrestling with his feelings for his first officer, Captain James Kirk is uniquely vulnerable to the arrival of an older, wiser version of Spock: one who has loved him for years, and is not afraid to have his feelings known...

    Summary

Autumn, 1930, New York City. The Guardian of Forever has given Spock and Captain Kirk one chance. An enterprising and neighbourly woman, Edith Keeler, is able to offer them work when they arrive, but Jim realises her rate of payment won't be enough to get them the supplies they need in order to locate McCoy before their timeline is forever altered. With little honest and lucrative work available, Jim manages to make a series of connections which will allow him to be paid for sexually servicing men at a discerning hotel in the evenings. Of course, Spock and Edith can't know.

Much like "City on the Edge of Forever", this is a Jim Kirk character study featuring complicated feelings about life, death, and falling in love.

    Summary

While the ship is laid over for a few days at Starbase 29, Kirk manages to convince Spock to spend some of their leave exploring a long-defunct building with him, hoping to uncover some of a Starfleet legend. Spock, who doesn't believe in such unfounded theories— and certainly not in ghosts— sees no harm in accompanying Kirk, if for no reason other than to protect him from his own imagination.

Inspired by the X-Files episode "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" (can be read whether or not you've seen it).

    Bookmarker's Notes

“Jim,” he ventured, once they’d begun moving again, “did you mean it when you said that you have… never been happier?”

“Well,” Kirk said, “I don’t know how literally you wanna take the word never, considering my leg has a third-degree phaser burn, and Bones is probably going to tear us both a new one when he finds out we had unprotected sex on hundred-year-old bedsheets, and we’ll have to tell the starbase security team— on Christmas Eve— that they need to send a crew down here because of some criminal muppet shrimp-people and at least two dead bodies that need to be retrieved, and—”
