Summary
Eren crosses the ocean on the backs of his Colossals.
They can swim; he cannot. This body is too huge, too dense. He has arms but they’re useless. He has legs but they drag after him. He scuttles along the ground on his hundreds of protruding ribs. He feels them puncture the soil, the sand. Rocks scrape against the exposed bone, and when he stands on the blisteringly hot exposed muscle of his Titans, the water steaming up around, it would be enough to char if it weren’t for his healing. He’s kept on the brink of burning, unable to let the heat kill his nerves.
It hurts.
But it only lasts a few hours.
And while the steam still burns, while the pressure on the points of his ribs is odd and painful, now, it is time for others to hurt —
—“Mikasa,” Eren says, shaking her awake. “Mikasa, wake up.”

Mr. and Mrs. Ackerman lie dead on the floor. His shirt is covered in blood; her neck is wide open. He can’t find it in himself to care. They’re nothing more to him than what their bodies mean for Mikasa. Less than, really.
“No good,” his father says, voice rough with horror. He takes his hand off Mrs. Ackerman and looks over his shoulder at him. “Eren, is there a girl nearby? Did you see Mikasa?”
Eren does not open his mouth and say, “No.” It’s not him who does that.

Summary
Armin feels his face twist into a snarl briefly, but when he looks at Eren, his eyes catch on his and Mikasa’s tangled hands. Hers are squirming under his grip, and then pull against her stomach in a gesture that makes Armin dizzy for a moment. He sees again that line of red, but—it’s not blood.
When he sees what it actually is, he almost wishes it was.
“‘M fine,” Mikasa says. Her breath is coming too fast, too shallow. “Just—cold…”Eren’s eyes shine with wonder, locked on their joint hands and what’s below them; the red spilling out from the gaps in her buttons.
That is not right, Armin thinks, gut churning. That shouldn’t be happening.
But at the same time, isn’t that just the same old story?***

“Stop crying,” Eren had demanded of her, just minutes before he boarded his ship. Mikasa remembered that day with a painful clarity: the hardened resolve of his expression, the gruffness of his still-deepening voice. The leather trunk that had sat heavy between them. Even though he’d stood right in front of her, everything about him screamed of his impending distance.
It had surprised her how willing he was to go. To leave her. To leave Armin. To leave her. Did the notion of their separation not pain him? Did it not stab into his heart and twist it until he couldn’t breathe?
