    Shen Yuan tilts his head, dark hair brushing the crest of his cheek. "All right, Meimei," he says. "You're nine."

    By the time Shen Fang is literally nine, she doesn't answer to Shen Fang anymore.

    Ge calls her Meimei or Ah Jiu. Nurse Zhao calls her Young Miss or brat or, sometimes, little demon. The tutors and almost all of the household staff are completely unaware that Shen Jiu isn't her given name in the first place.
