As he sat on the airplane and looked out the window to see the sprawling city below, he could not shake off the feeling that something was rotten in the state of Ba'alat. Sure, the FPA lost the war. Even so, they did not have to lose the peace. Despite everything he had heard, he still held this somewhat childish notion that Heinessen was the capital of the entire Sagittarius arm of the galaxy. The FPA's close to 300 years of history had to count for something. Sure, its political structure was no longer there, but that did not have to mean that centuries of a steady flow of commerce and star routes were for naught.
Yet hour after hour, as he looked around, read newspapers, and talked with Oliver, Alex realized how mistaken he had been.
