‘Shut up,’ Grace shot back cleverly.
‘You even had an advisor this time,’ Rocky said, still snickering. ‘You had Adrian as an advisor. And you still lost.’
Grace swivelled to glare daggers at him. ‘It’s 5D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel! Each game lasts, like, a million hours, and my brain checks out after the first ten!’
‘Yeah, we could tell.’
Adrian and Rocky are over at Grace's house for the night, and Adrian loves their idiots to death, even if they are idiots.

‘You’re not,’ Rocky insists, voice strident and pitched an octave higher than normal. ‘You’re not going to die.’
Grace’s eyes soften and well up with tears, his lip wobbling bravely. He finally smiles again, but the concomitant crease between his brows sullies it, leaves him jagged and brittle and poised to shatter at any moment, and Rocky has never felt closer to being human nor so far away from Grace than he does right now.
‘You’re not,’ Rocky vows.
‘…You really do believe that,’ Grace whispers, a tear tracing the curve of his cheek. He ignores his spine’s loud, creaking protests and leans down to rest his head against the xenonite.‘That’s why I’m sorry.’
Grace dies of old age. Rocky invents time travel about it. (And then keeps inventing it, again and again and again.)

I mean, who wouldn’t want easy access to acrid, slimy, borderline suicidal thoughts-inducing slop, right? Maybe if Stratt had had this stuff back on Earth, she’d have forced me to eat it so I’d have realised that going on a mission to save the world and then killing myself painlessly afterwards wasn’t so bad a deal after all, and I’d have avoided all that pesky amnesia and psychological trauma. But alas.
Grace isn't dying just yet, but he's getting there. Rocky may not be able to fix this, but he's here to help anyway.
