Summary
Luka hides his small smile behind the rim of his cup. He takes the lid off and looks down into his tea, staring at its reflection. He thinks about the unfinished score on his desk, about how the bow clattered against the table, and how the heavy silence in the estate just sits there, listening. He thinks about how he’d rather be in this stupid car, with Ivan’s dumb stories and lukewarm tea, than surrounded by everything that’s supposed to mean something.
See you tomorrow, Ivan had said. Luka wonders how many more tomorrows he will allow himself.
Ivan is very well versed in the act of wanting. Having, however, is another concept entirely.

Summary
There are certain moral frameworks that insist affection should not be transactional. That love must, instead, be built upon a foundation of purity, encompass the pertinent virtue of selflessness, and be born, and henceforth nurtured, to grow unconditionally. Yet Luka has never encountered said ideology in practice.
Love, as he understands it, has always involved a form of exchange:
- His father had loved him because he was exceptional.
- Hyuna had loved him because she believed he was weak and that she could save him.
And Ivan… Ivan is here because he is lonely.

Summary
The clock has always been ticking for Luka, who has been hospitalised for as long as he can remember. But when Hyun-Woo becomes his roommate after a rock climbing accident, Luka meets Hyuna, and for the first time, he gets a taste of what it is like to live as though his heart is not real. He clings to that feeling, because letting go feels impossible. However, he soon is made to learn what it means to love without time, without permanence; to die slowly, love selfishly, and make art out of what is left, giving what little he has like it is everything.

Summary
On a hot summer night by the sea, Luka and Ivan find themselves building ephemeralities.
A sandcastle collapses, “treasures” are stolen, and Ivan holds on too tightly. Luka, against all reason, lets him.
College parties were never supposed to feel like this.

Summary
It wasn’t Ivan’s idea. Well, not really. He’d just suggested they do something normal for once. Something stupid and loud—and Luka, who always rolled his eyes at anything that sounded like “fun,” had blinked once at the word bar and gone, “Fine. Just one drink.”
Now, Ivan was regretting not filming that first drink go down, because somewhere between “just one drink,” and Luka tipping his fourth shot glass over with a flushed giggle, Ivan had realised two things:
1. Luka was a lightweight.
2. He had no idea how to act when he wasn’t pretending to be all doll-like and poised.

Summary
She’s bent over him, frozen, hardly breathing. Luka takes the opportunity to look at her—really look at her, committing her to memory. He wants to remember her wherever he goes after he dies. If he can’t have her in this life, maybe he can in another.
“Don’t let go,” he pleads, soft and fervent as a prayer. “Hold me when I die. Please.”
Hyuna turns her face away for a long moment, shoulders shaking as she breathes. Luka knows this motion, long-remembered from childhood. He tugs on a strand of hair, pulls her face back to his.
“Don’t cry,” Luka whispers.
When Hyuna comes to kill him, Luka is already waiting.

Summary
They are so small, weaker and even more fragile than he is, like the light of tiny flickering candles waiting to be snuffed out by the faintest breeze. They don't do much besides eat and cry, demanding her undivided attention at all times of the day, and yet Hyuna loves them more than anything.
More than herself, more than her freedom, and certainly more than him.
Luka cannot understand why.
He glares, but the baby doesn't seem to understand his ire, simply staring up at him with eyes like his, wide and curious. The baby giggles, much to his confusion, smiling up at him despite the obvious dislike he is trying to convey to the little thing, and something odd stirs in his chest, warm like he'd swallowed a miniature sun.
His expression softens a little.
Perhaps he can understand, if only a little, why Hyuna seems to like them so much.
After escaping with Hyuna and unwillingly joining the rebellion, Luka learns to be human.

Summary
Hyuna doesn’t take thralls the way many vampires do, Luka has learned, over his months with her; she doesn’t care whether her prey is willing or unwilling, only that they are free. He’s discomfiting, then, for her—his habitual, half-forgotten willingness.

Summary
"I'm sorry, could you repeat that?" Hyuna asks, her voice awfully calm despite the cold, unbridled rage building steadily in her veins, and Heperu abruptly stops talking.
From across the disproportionately long table she has the sudden, violent urge to kick across the room, the slug of a segyein regards her shrewdly, as though he were already starting to question the rationality behind his very expensive investment along with her overall intellectual capabilities.
Asshole.
"At least two products over the course of the next three years," he repeats, like he's discussing the fucking weather, "As stated in the contract, the first will remain here with me, while the second will go to Phan."
Hyuna is captured during the attempt to rescue Mizi after Round 5
