Summary
“You don't listen, Gem!” Her first mate shouts, long brown hair whipping around her face. The captain has told her over a dozen times she should pull it back, but the first mate rarely listens. “You jump in headfirst without coming up with a plan, and it explodes in your face! Every time, Gem! And yet you keep doing it, as if it’s the first! You never think things through!”
The first mate looks angry. Furious, even. It takes a lot to get the first mate riled up. Normally, she’s the hotheaded one, always quick to act on emotion, while her second in command is calm, cool, and collected. Easily flustered, maybe, but not easily angered. It’s almost as though they’ve switched roles.
How strange, the captain thinks to herself.

Summary
The shadows were restless. That meant they were whispering, which meant they were actively getting louder, which meant that Scar’s thoughts had been replaced with the incoherent chatter going on around him.
“Would you shut up?” He snapped at the air. “I’m trying to think.”
He didn’t know how many were in there with him. He didn’t want to look. They tended to wander as they pleased around the first floor, whether or not he was in the room—though something kept them from going up the stairs.
Which was completely fine with Scar. It meant he could at least fall asleep in peace, even if he did always wake up screaming.
Or, Scar hasn’t left his house in a while, on account of the constant nightmares, relentless pain, and overwhelming exhaustion. The shadows haunting him aren’t much help, either.

She stops her work to stare at him, astonishment lining her face. “Don’t you know when the king was crowned? By God, man, even the greatest fool in the kingdom could tell you that—I know because I’m married to him.”
“Your husband is a fool?” Pearl asks.
The gravedigger shrugs. “Well, he married me, so there must be something wrong with him.”

Grace set down the bowl he had been mixing things in and walked over to Simon, whose chopped vegetables were coming out in very uneven slices due to a combination of shaking hands and blurry vision.
“Are you feeling alright…?” Grace reached his hand up in an attempt to feel Simon’s forehead.
Simon flinched. Like, full on, jumped backwards and pointed the knife in Grace’s direction. His leg muscles tightened as if he was preparing to run, but whether it was away from or towards Grace, he wasn’t sure.

Simon wanted nothing more to prove he could be helpful.

Ryland huffs out a laugh at that, bringing his hand down to rest on his knees to push himself back up to lean against the table, “ Well I can see that now ,but it's only for like special occasions or something right, kinda like our ceremonial uniforms back home, right ?”
A long silence followed.
“...No.”
“No?”
“No… All Rocky plural, wear clothes.”
The silence is so thick Ryland doesn't even think a knife could cut it.
He stares at Rocky, even though the alien doesn't have eyes. “ So you're a nudist…?”
OR
Rocky doesn't explain a very important cultural norm to Ryland.

He pressed himself further back into the corner, a snarl coming to his lips. The eye creatures never reacted to his shouting, but they did hesitate when he growled. But when the lanky aliens came around the corner, they didn't so much as look at him. Instead, they were focused on what looked like a stretcher, the kind that ambulances used back on Earth.
Sitting atop it, perfectly still, was another human.
Scar felt his heart stop in his chest. It was impossible. There was no way there was another human on the ship. It had to be a trick of some kind, a robot made to look human, or a statue, or something. This was some sort of experiment, a test to see how he would react to seeing something that looked like his own species.
But they looked so lifelike.

or, abducted by a rogue group of alien scientists, Scar is nothing more than a test subject. After a year alone, he finally gets a friend. As the only two humans outside of the solar system, they have only each other to rely on. Alone, it was impossible to escape. But with Grian by his side, maybe, just maybe, they have a chance.
