That Shane had been brave, even though he was scared. That Shane had won his Ilya. That Shane had written a story for them where they could be happy.
Shane pulled back in the circle of Ilya’s arms. He knew his face was covered in tears, and probably snot. He wasn’t going to think about that now. It wasn’t important.
He met Ilya’s eyes, forcing himself to hold the eye contact. “In another universe,” he said, as clearly as he could, “I would have liked to adopt a dog with you.”
Ilya breathed in through his nose, sharp and deep.
“In another universe,” Shane said, “I would have liked to live in that New York penthouse with you, or in Boston, or anywhere we wanted. Maybe Montreal or Ottawa, eventually. I would have liked to learn more figure skating with you, and go dancing together, and invent a new sport called hockey together.”
Abruptly, Ilya leaned forward and dropped his head to Shane’s shoulder. Shane put a hand on the back of his neck, petting his curls. “
