Safi slipped off her stool, and Max watched her dark hair disappear in the crowd. They hadn’t gotten to really talk about anything other than the fire—they’d been going all night, but Safi was skirting around everything with pointed avoidance, and Max was getting jittery. She had heard it all from Chloe; Safi nearly killed herself. They had slept together. Twice.
So why did it feel like nothing had changed at all?
