With his hand on the door handle, he hesitated for a brief moment. He had done everything to make sure he wouldn't come; he had followed his routine for days, he had specifically asked a few people about it, and he might even have gone so far as to have someone tail Eugene around, but he didn't trust anyone enough to have them follow Eugene all day.
He had jumped onto this balcony aware that it was a plan hinged on a thread of hope; with the same tense feeling, he pushed the door aside and stood frozen on the threshold due to the familiarity that hit him in the face.
