“Dutch and I are older. You’re closest to his age.” Hosea puts a hand up to halt Arthur’s protestations at that– “I know you’re an adult Arthur, you’re still the youngest. He can see an easier path to being you than to being me or being Dutch. That’s a valuable thing for a young man that’s been through what he has.”
He moves his hand to pat Arthur’s arm. “I’ll still be showing him things, but I want him taking your example, too. We all have to pitch in.”
Arthur grunts, and frowns, and gnaws at his lip. But ultimately he acquiesces and bows his big head in deference to his fathers’ wills.
John Marston starts, to him, a burden.

It was made of cotton and linen, dyed black. There were also some soft pieces added to the panels in the front. Satin or silk, Abigail thought. She didn’t know much about finer fabrics. The boning was firm and in wonderful condition. It was made to fit a woman of a larger stature than her own. Perfect for John’s tall, muscular form.

She was fascinated that Arthur knew how to read, made him read her street signs and dime novels and late at night after her parents had gone to bed he sat next to an oil lamp at the foot of her bed and read aloud psalms.
They were beautiful, he decided. He never really understood the whole religion thing, finds it foolish to love and listen and trust someone you don’t know because maybe you’ll end up in paradise in the end. But the psalms sat nicely in his heart, reminded him of the wilderness and the stars and the way Annabelle would sometimes sing church hymns around camp only for Dutch to kiss her and laugh; “We’re all sinners darlin’ and that ain’t ever gonna change.”

Arthur’s heart skips a few beats, he suddenly needs to lean back on the doorway, head dizzy, overwhelmed.
John looks hopeful, gentle. It’s been years since he’s looked at Arthur with such love in his eyes. Abigail looks like she could cry.
Arthur nods at before the rest of his body catches up.
“I would love that,” he says breathlessly.

John doesn’t understand, but he nods anyway. Another breeze blows through the air, and he shivers without meaning to. The ground is ice-cold against his bare feet. It’s fine, though--he’s used to it.
Suddenly there’s a warm weight on his head, and he reaches up to feel leather and rope. It’s a hat, worn and soft with age. He looks at Arthur, whose head is now uncovered.
“Keep it for the night, kid,” he says. There’s a faint smile on his face. “That little mop of hair ain’t gonna keep you warm.”

Nevertheless, Raven was always going to be Raven, and she sure as hell wasn’t the martyr her ex-boyfriend was. Try as she might, she wasn’t exactly kind to Murphy. She was short and snarky and aggressive, but that wasn’t too bad because he was, too. They had almost reached a certain level of angry companionship. Raven was good at giving orders, and Murphy, once he was done sassily expressing his pseudo-discontent, was surprisingly good at taking them.
Or: Raven needs to get off, and Murphy needs a friend. Neither expected their needs to be fulfilled by the other.
