“When dead whales sink down to the sea floor, they become a whole”—Grace waves his hands in a big circle and draws out the word to emphasise his point—“ecosystem for a tonne of bottom dwelling creatures down there.
“To them, it’s the equivalent of an oasis falling from the sky and landing in the middle of a desert. It can feed them for decades, and gosh, the microbes that can be found there. I would love to study a whale fall...if they weren't at the bottom of the ocean. Eugh.” He shudders dramatically. “If I never have to go in a submarine, I will die happy.”
Eva wonders if the whale died happy. Or, at least, happy to know its death would bring life to so many. Surely that was a comfort when faced with the end.

(Stratt is the most mysterious occupant of their four-units complex. She’s Dutch and looks a few years older than him, but it’s hard to tell since she’s always sporting an impressive scowl, as if she was always in a hurry and irritated at people getting in her way. During the four years that he’s lived here, they’ve exchanged maybe twenty words, fifteen of which were “Hello”.
Most of the time, like today, they don’t even say the words out loud, just give each other curt nods and go about their business.
However, as luck would have it, today is the day that his lighter suddenly refuses to work, and Ryland sighs and raises his eyes to the sky — well, the concrete ceiling — because there is one thing and one thing only that he knows about Stratt, and that is that she smokes like a chimney.)
