Birds have woken up and started to chirp their morning songs. The rain finally slows, drops clinging to leaves and odd blade of grass before they drip lazily to the ground. Hans wants to strangle the nobleman in front of him.

"You've slept in," Henry chides playfully. "You're usually up with the birds, you."
Hans issues a soft, breathy laugh from his nose. It's difficult to know how to respond when they're lying together like this. Beyond these walls it's easy to slip back into the routine of knight and squire, two young men who have fought in battle, and have every reason to laugh twice as hard for the deaths they've escaped. Within them, however, it feels nebulous. This feeling, this them: knight and squire; Galehaut and Lancelot; Hans and Henry. Two friends, two lovers. He hopes.
He hopes.
Hans's eyes point in the direction of his trapped arm and he opts to say, "My wing has been clipped."
Hans and Henry share a bed after the victory at Suchdol.

The sword that Henry carries—forged by his Pa for his father—has always felt weighted by duty. The duty to honor is Ma and Pa. To remember them. To avenge them. The duty sworn to Sir Radzig, too. The duty of his blood, dishonored by Istvan Toth, to be repaid in its pound of the bastard’s flesh. But for this moment, the sword does not feel saturated in oaths and blood. It feels like…a gift.

Henry always gives almost all of his body, all the time, every time, to everyone. But there is always something there that he doesn’t let out so easily. It clings, with claws, to his chest. It curls in his mouth like a lock of Hans’s hair in the bath.
