Hugo suddenly stopped in the shadow of a courtyard gateway. He tilted his head, and his eyes sparked mysteriously. Those eyes - like two glowing embers (not that Stefan ever gazed into them) - had always been Hugo’s most faithful means of expression, clearer and more effective than any sparingly measured words from his narrow lips. Yet now their meaning remained unreadable to Stefek. Too much whisky.

Oczy, te oczy jak dwa żarzące się węgle (nie, żeby Stefan w nie spoglądał) były od zawsze najwierniejszą formą ekspresji Hugona; klarowniejszą i bardziej skuteczną niż jakiekolwiek oszczędnie dawkowane słowa w jego wąskich ustach - teraz jednak ich wyraz pozostał dla Stefka nieodczytywalny.
