Meanwhile, a horrified Hayden is praying for someone to throw him in a lake and tell him that this is all just a big joke, or maybe for a meteor strike; he is really not picky. J.J., on the other hand, is trying to bleach the image of his sweet captain making out with Ilya fucking Rozanov from his brain.

    “Lily,” Hayden says automatically. “You know about Lily?”

    Something flickers across Rozanov’s face. His jaw twitches. “Yes, I know about Lily.” He raises his eyebrows.

    Hayden feels like a complete asshole, all of a sudden. There’s just been too much going on to even think about Shane’s mystery girlfriend. “Shit, I should probably, like, call her, or something? I don’t know this girl at all, but Shane’s been obsessed with her for years. If she was watching the game, she would have seen him get hurt.”

    “You don’t need to call her,” Rozanov says, and when Hayden glances at him, he still looks fucking miserable but now he’s rolling his eyes, a much more familiar expression of disdain on his face. “She’s sitting right here.”

    Hayden Pike and Ilya Rozanov are waiting for Shane to wake up after he took a bad hit on the ice. They get to talking.

    “I just mean…” Shane’s face was serious; his eyes were doing that puppy-dog thing that Ilya couldn’t resist, where they looked earnest and soft and serious all at once. "What if we didn’t wait to come out? Rather than waiting until we retire. Maybe, I don’t know, stopped hiding quite so much and just… let people figure it out, eventually.”

    Shane and Ilya are done hiding. Coming out, however, is another story. Between family, friends, fans, teammates, and a league still grappling with inclusivity, changing the narrative might just prove more complicated than they expected.
