Summary
Grace did have someone back on Earth before he was put aboard the Hail Mary against his will. Someone who had spent his time with before and during his time with the Petrova Task Force.
He was elated when he found out he could save Earth AND go home with Rocky's help. But some things tend to happen unexpectedly. It was such a hard choice for him but he couldn't just leave Rocky in space knowing they had both worked on the astrophage problem but was only able to save Grace's planet and himself. So he sent out the beetles with everything that they needed. Including a letter for a certain someone that he had left back home without words.
