Summary
“We haven’t done this since middle school,” Will says, voice barely above a whisper.
“Huh,” Mike whispers back. “Yeah, guess not.”
A couple years ago, Mike read a National Geographic article about a phenomenon called the polar night. In the farthest north and south regions of the globe, there are weeks, sometimes months depending on how close you are to the poles, where the sun does not rise above the horizon, plunging the world into a perpetual nighttime. Living in such conditions, the article had explained, can affect one’s circadian rhythm, heighten issues with concentration and energy levels, and cause a spike in depressive symptoms among local populations. Some resort to using light therapy lamps to mimic the daylight.
It was only after the Byers moved away, all those years ago, that Mike began to understand what the prolonged absence of the sun can do to a person.
The Upside Down is gone, and everyone has made it out unscathed. In the aftermath of the not-so-end of the world, snowballs turn into avalanches. Sometimes it just takes time.
or: Mike gets into Brown, Will gets into RISD, and the friends-to-???-to-lovers slowburn that ensues.

Summary
Three weeks after his breakup, Will Byers finds out Carlton has already moved on.
Mike Wheeler takes it personally.
What starts as a dumb joke about fake dating spirals into faceless Instagram posts, café dates, fake flirting, and a relationship that starts feeling a little too real way too fast.
For Will, it’s a disaster waiting to happen—because he’s been in love with Mike for years, and pretending Mike is his boyfriend feels dangerously close to everything he’s ever wanted.
For Mike, it’s confusing in ways he can’t quite explain.
Especially when he realizes he likes the pretending far more than he should.
OR/
Mike and Will start fake dating after Will's breakup to try to make Carlton jealous.
Unfortunately, neither of them are very good at pretending.

Summary
“No!” Mike exclaimed, “Holly, I’m not marrying him!”
“Why?” Holly whined, as Mike tried to walk away. She threw both arms around his legs and sank to the floor, sitting on his feet so that it was extremely difficult to walk.
“Because,” said Mike, trying to free himself from her grip by shaking his legs. She only held on tighter.
“But he’s so amazing,” said Holly, as Mike shuffled his feet slowly when he realised she would not be relinquishing her hold on him anytime soon. He dragged her into the hallway so he could put on his coat. “He’s the best, most incrediblest, most fantastic babysitter in the whole world! You should marry him!”
Or; Will Byers, well-known as an outcasted freak at Hawkins High, is Holly Wheeler’s babysitter, and perhaps the loveliest person Mike has ever met.

Summary
“So, wanna bunk with me this week?” He tried to hide his eagerness with a fake nonchalance. Will looked up quickly.
“Oh- um… yeah. Sure,” he nodded, and their eyes briefly met before Will averted his. Was Mike hallucinating or did Will’s cheeks seem redder than usual? He wanted to continue talking when Dustin slammed the bathroom door open, with a loud flush behind him, and announced, “Alright soldiers, operation Hiroshima has been terminated. We may proceed with our travels.”
“Eugh…” Mike muttered and turned to grimace at Will, who thankfully shared the look. Behind him, the expression was mirrored on the cleaning lady's face.
--
The day after graduation, the Party sets out for Steve’s cottage in Muskoka for a week of sunshine, adventure, and reckless summer fun.
After drifting apart from Will during their senior year of high school, Mike hopes the trip might help them find their way back to each other.
Instead, it forces him to confront feelings he’s spent years trying to bury.
