Summary
“Jesus, Will. No! Yes? I don’t know. I’m just saying if your type is people that look like him then it’s kind of shallow- not shallow- restrictive. There’s many other physiques out there. And yeah, Lucas has beautiful glistening skin, broad shoulders, big muscles and a deep voice. And he is athletic with nice hair-”
“Kinda sounds to me like he is actually your type.” Max grins.
“Thanks, bro. I appreciate it.”
or,
Mike has come to believe that Lucas is Will's type. (He is not.) Mike now thinks the best way to handle to situation is to either be more like Lucas or to change Will's type. Except he is stupid and everyone is tired of him.

Summary
“Either way, they’re fine with it as long as we’re back home by two. Honestly, we could probably get away with staying out the whole night. I think your mom in particular might actually be happy if you got into some normal teenage trouble for once.”
“That might be true,” Will allows, smirking slightly. “Okay, sure. We can leave at seven? After dinner?”
“Great.” Mike grins, the tension leaving his shoulders almost completely. For a second, he seems to hesitate, fingers tightening in the leather, before he releases it long enough to give Will’s hand a squeeze that lasts all of one second but sets Will’s entire body on fire. “It’s a date.”
Which makes Will’s heart just about give out.
--
In which Mike asks Will out on a date once the Upside Down is closed for good and Will does a healthy amount of freaking out about it. All things considered, it goes pretty well, even if Steve isn't happy about them breaking curfew.

Summary
“Heart,” he croaks as black dots begin to dance at the edges of his vision. He would explain to them, if he could, that he’s not in pain. That he is glad to be with them at the end, and he’s sorry he didn’t tell them sooner.
He really thought he’d get his happy ending.
A weight settles atop his abdomen with enough force for him to feel it. He opens his eyes briefly when his chin is tilted up; all he can see is Mike, his face collapsing in agony. Will’s thankful that the oxygen deprivation knocks him out before he has time to really dwell on how many regrets he has about him.
He’s still the only thing he thinks about as he says on his last exhale, “Heart.”
(or: a combination of basement gate & the theory that will would have a fake out death. a rewrite of the scenes pre- and post-vecna fight, but not the vecna fight itself)

Summary
"Tell me a secret?"
Mike asks, like he's come to do every day, late at night, when the darkness can swallow the guilt and the regret rushing out of their hearts, when their sides press together, the floor long forgotten, ever since the first Will, please, come up here.
Will is a terrible person.
I'm in love with you. I'm having visions. I'm in love with you. I'm not really having nightmares, Vecna is tempting me with a version of you that loves me back. I'm in love with you.
"I think my death is the easiest solution to everything. The Upside Down will die with me."
Will can hear Mike swallow next to him.
"Will, I would let the world burn down to ashes if it meant keeping you in it."
or
They're back in Hawkins, everything is the way it's always been, except - yeah, it's still the middle of an apocalypse, Will is having nosebleeds and Mike would sacrifice the world for his best friend but is still losing him.

Summary
“Ouch.” Max says sarcastically, adding a seventh line to the “you suck” tally on the whiteboard. “Seven to zero. Watching your attempts at flirting is getting painful.”
“I’m not flirting,” Mike tries a lie, “that was a normal interaction.”
“Keep telling yourself that, numbnuts,” Max responds drily, “you couldn’t get a date with Will Byers to save your life.”
With the help of his snarky ice cream-scooping coworker Max, Mike Wheeler’s life is turned into nothing short of a wreck as he pathetically goes about trying to charm Will Byers.
