After Newt's final encounter with Thomas, everything should have ended there. But Newt, being incredibly (or terribly) lucky, survives the gunshot, and now all that gnaws at him are the words he said to Thomas.
He needs to apologize.
And all he knows from this moment on is north. He goes where he hopes Tommy is alright.

He felt his ears to be ringing, and feared the black that would soon wipe over his eyes, but instead he closed them himself, and only sobbed again. Tears down his face, staining his hair— already covered in sweat and blood— dirtying the pavement beneath him.
He realized, after a moment, that he was speaking again. Rushed whispers, words that didn’t exactly add up, until they did. Words that would’ve scared him if he’d been any more stable. “Tommy, I love you.”

Nearly a year after the fall of WCKD, life at Safe Haven has settled into something quieter than Thomas ever thought possible. People have started building homes instead of shelters, the island finally feels safe, and although the grief never really leaves, Thomas has learned how to live with the memory of Newt’s death.
Then a boat washes ashore carrying survivors from the mainland and rumors about an organization operating beyond the coastlines left behind after the collapse of the Last City.
At first, Thomas tries not to think much of it.
That becomes impossible the second he starts hearing details that sound far too familiar.
