As for what exactly the Sentinel was, no one knew.

Neo-religions called it a god. They claimed the Sentinel as their deity and ornamented their shrines with paltry imitations of the vivid blue light that lent its heartbeat to the city, declaring that they were the chosen people, that New Tokyo had been blessed. Suguru had no patience for such cultists. To him the Sentinel was no god.

Ever since he was very small he’d claimed it only as a friend.

    “Suguru, have you lost weight?”

The words slip from his lips before he can fully process them. Suguru responds with a dismissive wave of his hand, brushing off the concern like an annoying fly.

“It’s just heat fatigue. I’ll be fine.”

But it's August... and he's wearing his winter uniform. The contradiction gnaws at Satoru. He should say something more, push harder. But what if he's overreacting? What if Suguru just feels more comfortable this way? But no—the Suguru he knows would be sprawled in the shade complaining about the heat, not bundled up like it's December. Satoru's mind ricochets between concern and self-doubt.

///OR: In an alternate universe, after the Star Plasma Vessel Incident occurred, Satoru notices the changes within Suguru. But can he fix things?

Suguru is a humble fisherman, content with his quiet life by the shore — until a violent storm leaves a breathtaking stranger washed ashore. Taking him in changes everything: what begins as simple kindness slowly grows into a fierce, tender love that challenges the world Suguru thought he knew.

How I Write with Gojo Satoru | Saturday Magazine

“I write diligently, in my own way. People think writing has to do with schedules and work ethic and whatnot, but in reality it is all about sympathy. Pretty basic. But if I think about how I started to write — how I could see people’s pain but never relate to it in a meaningful way — and how I see them now, there is a big gap, there is more understanding. Yet it’s difficult, at times, you know, when your best work is done alone, to remember that a person’s life still holds value beyond the memories that create their identity.”

Or: Gojo Satoru is reunited with his former best friend Geto Suguru when his book is acquired by major publisher Mappa. Spanning across over ten years of maybes and won’t, this is the publishing au no one ever asked for.

A lesson in love is a lesson in swimming. Except for Suguru, it's getting dropped into the deep end with the tide licking at his neck, no kickboard or life preserver keeping him afloat.

(Or: This is how Satoru finds the ocean.)
