Summary
Macy knows how to run away, but she hasn't figured out how to stay away. No matter how many times she tries to escape her freshman year, she always returns. Her social circle is a small ecosystem with Brooks, Asher, and Evelyn, though Evelyn is no best friend and would easily choose others over Macy. Everyone in high school is obsessed with shipping Macy with Asher, ignoring the boundaries she has established. She thought she knew the boundaries of her friend group perfectly. Macy keeps a massive, concealed crush on Brooks—a friend who often seems to be observing her just as closely—while viewing Asher strictly as a brother. But a single game of truth or dare changes the map entirely. It was just a dare (right?)—until the kiss happens, the wrong secrets come out, and they find themselves exactly one dare away from a disaster. Asher is suddenly playing for keeps, harboring feelings he can no longer hide. Meanwhile, Macy is having an internal meltdown, completely conscious of Brooks watching from across the room.
